Dad acquitted in son's death from dog bite.
Zachary Zane King was acquitted today of second degree manslaughter in the death of his son, Zach Jr., who was bitten by the family pit bull. The verdict by Judge Kevin Burke is available here. Burke said that there was no evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that King knew that the dog was dangerous, as required by the statute under which he was charged.

Thanks for linking to this -- what seems a fair and even wise decision. Refreshingly, the judge here is clear on the fact that court opinions should be written for the public as well as for his or her fellow judges and lawyers. The few pit bulls I’ve met have all been fine animals, but if I were a vet I’d want to make copies of this opinion available in my clinic’s waiting room.
