Report from Washington, D.C.: MSBA lobbies for Legal Aid

Minnesota Lawyer associate editor Barbara Jones, reporting from our nation’s capital, said that the Minnesota State Bar Association delegation participating in the American Bar Association’s Lobby Day had a productive initial round of meetings with Minnesota members of Congress and their representatives.

The MSBA group includes MSBA president Brian Melendez, Minneapolis attorney Sue Holden (past president of the MSBA), Hennepin County District Court Judge Cara Lee Neville, St. Cloud attorney Michael Ford (MSBA president-elect), MSBA staff member Nancy Mischel and Jerry Lane of Mid-Minnesota Legal Assistance.

A big part of the lobbying activity has been in support of more federal money for Legal Aid. Nationally, the ABA has called upon Congress to raise Legal Aid funding by $121 million to a total of $471 million. Barbara reports that Minnesota Congress members have so far been generally been very supportive of Legal Aid in the delegation’s meetings with them.

The delegation yesterday met with Congressmen Keith Ellison and Tim Walz. It also met with representatives from the offices of Senator Norm Coleman and Congressman Jim Ramstad. (The ABA recognized Ramstad for his contributions to the justice system at an event last night.)

Barb reports that Walz told the group that equal access to justice is of “paramount concern," and said he will do whatever needs to be done to get legislation through that helps to ensure it.

An interesting side note: Barb reports that Melendez is only meeting with the DFL members of the Minnesota delegation. Melendez, of course, in addition to being MSBA president, is chair of the state’s DFL Party.

Legal aid presents "Masters of the Courtroom"

There’s an outstanding CLE opportunity coming our way in conjunction with the 27th Annual Law Day Testimonial Dinner. Not only that, but it’s an opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause, The Legal Aid Society, since the tuition will be donated to it.

“Masters of the Courtroom” will be presented on Thursday May 1 and offers six CLE credits for $350 with a faculty consisting entirely of Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers. The combined value of jury verdicts and settlements obtained by the faculty exceeds $10 billion. In approximately the last 12 months, the presenters have obtained jury verdicts of $131 million, $52 million, $30 million and a number of settlements well in excess of eight figures.

It will be followed by the law day dinner, featuring Tom Goldstein, co-head of the Supreme Court Practice Group at Akin Gump in Washington D.C. and author of the SCOTUSBLOG.

'Tis the season

Nothing says Christmas like a large group of Santas. And as we move in to the final leg of the holiday season, what could be better than taking one last look as the festive folks who participated in the annual Santa Run to benefit Legal Aid earlier this month. Kudos to the local firm of Faegre & Benson, which had the largest number of participants in the event, earning it the much-coveted "Santa Trophy."

Running in a Winter Wonderland

Despite a storm that blanketed the metro area with close to half a foot of snow this weekend, a hardy band of lawyers, paralegals, legal administrators and other friends and supporters of Legal Aid donned Santa suits and participated in the "Santa Run" in downtown Minneapolis. This was the 2nd annual benefit run, the proceeds of which go toward providing free legal services to poor and disadvantaged Minnesotans. The 1.25 mile run started at the YWCA on Nicollet Mall. NYC Legal Aid lawyer loses focus

There were a couple of interesting posts on the Wall Street Journal Law blog Friday. One was about a 32-year-old former New York Legal Aid Lawyer charged with unlawfully videotaping his female colleagues in their offices. A motion-activated camera was found hidden inside an alarm clock in one woman's office, along with some video images on it. The defendant attorney -- a Georgetown graduate -- reportedly purchased the security camera at a Sharper Image store. (For more, click here.) Besides the gentleman's obviously boorish behavior (assuming the charges prove true), I find the most incredible part of the story the fact that a Legal Aid lawyer living in Manhattan could actually scrap together enough funds to buy something at the Sharper Image.

In a second item, the WSJ Law Blog announced it will be on vacation in Maine this week (Click here for details.) Who knew blogs take vacations? I wonder what a blog looks like in a bathing suit? .... Fortunately, the Minnesota Lawyer blog remains open for business. I will be in Stillwater for a bar association function on Thursday, but that is about as close as I will get to any coastline this week.
